class descriptions

Step into your craft. Our classes are designed to guide you through strength, sensuality, and self-expression, offering space to explore your magic in a welcoming, affirming community.

  • Pole classes focus on tricks, spins, transitions, and combos—building the strength, alignment, and mobility you need to move safely, perform with confidence, and level up.

    • New to pole? This is the perfect place to start your journey. In this beginner-friendly class, you’ll build a strong foundation in pole by learning essential techniques like basic spins, sits, climbs, and floorwork. We’ll focus on building strength, confidence, and body awareness while helping you feel comfortable both on and around the pole.

*Prerequisites: No prior experience or upper body strength required—just come ready to move, explore, and have fun! Stay in Intro for as long as you like, and return any time to refresh your foundational skills.

    • You’ve got the basics—now it’s time to level up. This class is for students who feel confident with the foundational moves and are ready to build the strength and control needed for inversions. You’ll deepen your technique, learn new beginner-level shapes, and start linking moves to create longer, more fluid combos. Expect a fun challenge that builds stamina, body awareness, and confidence as you progress toward intermediate skills.

*Prerequisites: A working understanding of basic grips, pole stand, cross-leg pole sit, pirouettes, fireman spin, and front and back hook spin. We recommend that absolute beginners start at the Intro level (Level 1).

    • This class bridges the gap between beginner and intermediate pole. You’ll refine foundational skills, build strength and control for inversions and explore early intermediate moves, combos, and transitions. Not quite ready for aerial inverts, brass monkey, or shoulder mounts? This is your class.

*Prerequisites: Strong foundation in beginner skills. Students should be comfortable with climbing, pole sits, basic spins, laybacks, and have started working on basic invert preps or low inversions (e.g. crucifix, inside leg hang from the floor).

    • In this class, you’ll build strength and control as you take your inversions to new heights—literally. Start working toward aerial inverts and create longer, more dynamic combos with smooth transitions. You’ll dive into fun, challenging shapes like hip holds, brass monkey, and shoulder mounts, all while sharpening your technique and boosting your confidence in the air.

*Prerequisites: outside leg hang, crucifix, confident climb, genie, pole sit, layback, figurehead, martini, one-handed static spins.

    • In Level 4, you’ll begin working on handsprings and continue developing strength and body awareness for more advanced moves like aerial shoulder mounts, brass monkey variations, and Ayesha and handspring entries. You’ll turn foundational skills into transitions as you explore dynamic movement, shifting contact points, and longer aerial combinations, helping you build control, fluidity, and confidence in the air.

*Prerequisites: Aerial invert, extended butterfly, shoulder mount, brass monkey, caterpillar climb, reverse grab, pole handstand, cross-knee layback.

  • Explore musicality, expression, and storytelling through choreographed sequences using the lower half of the pole. These classes fuse technique with artistry, helping you build fluid transitions, grounded strength, and powerful stage presence—whether you're dancing low to the floor, in heels, or around the pole.

    • Knee pads are encouraged in most choreography classes. Unless noted in the class title or description, heels, socks, or bare feet are all welcome. Dressing in layers is encouraged.

    • Classes labeled “Intro” or “Beginner” in the class name are a great place to start if you have limited experience with pole choreography, floorwork, basework, or dancing in heels (for heels-based classes). All other classes, including those labeled "All Levels," are suitable for high-beginner to advanced students, with instructors offering modifications and variations for a range of skill levels.

    • Choreography class names vary depending on the instructor's signature style, but specific terms may be helpful to understand what to expect:

      • Floorwork: Dance elements that use the floor as an apparatus, typically from a seated or lying position, and using minimal support from the pole. Examples include backward and forward rolls, seated leg waves, and shoulder stands.

      • Flow: Dance technique focused on fluidity, oozing in and out of individual dance elements, and embracing the space in between moves or tricks. Flow can describe both grounded and aerial movements.

      • Musicality: The practice of syncing movements to music, using choreography to enhance the beats, lyrics, or instrumentation of a specific song.

  • Strengthen, refine, and expand your movement practice at any stage of your journey. These all-levels classes are designed to deepen technique, build power and flexibility, and support fluid, confident expression—both on and off the pole.

    • Elevate your pole practice by building balanced, functional strength on and off the pole. Through targeted drills, muscle awareness, and injury prevention technique, you’ll identify and correct muscle imbalances while supporting your body to thrive in the studio and beyond. Your ritual for longevity, control, and embodied power.

*Prerequisites: All are welcome! Modifications for all levels provided.

    • Bend, breathe, become. This class is designed to support your pole and aerial movement by increasing range of motion, mobility, and control. Through intentional stretches, active flexibility drills, and joint prep, you’ll build strength and suppleness for graceful lines and powerful shapes—in the air and on the ground. This is more than just stretching; it’s a practice in patience, presence, and unlocking your body’s full potential.

*Prerequisites: All are welcome! Modifications for all levels provided.

Student Conduct Policies

  • Respect and Safety: At After Dark, we are committed to creating a space that is welcoming, inclusive, supportive, and empowering. We invite students to explore self-expression through dance and movement in an environment rooted in mutual respect and care. All students are expected to treat instructors, fellow students, and studio equipment with respect. This means maintaining a safe, supportive, and respectful atmosphere at all times—both in class and during studio events. Bullying, harassment, unwanted sexual advances, or other forms of disrespect will not be tolerated.

  • Substance-Free Environment: To maintain a safe and focused space, students must arrive sober and in a clear state of mind. The use of drugs or alcohol before or during class is strictly prohibited.

  • Hands-on assists and spotting: Instructors may offer hands-on assists or spotting for safety and technique, but will always ask for consent first. For safety and liability reasons, only After Dark instructors, who are fully insured, may teach or spot during class. Students are not permitted to spot or instruct one another.

  • Punctuality and Engagement: Timeliness and presence create a safe and welcoming experience for everyone. Please arrive on time and remain engaged throughout class. Disruptions such as excessive talking, non-participation, or other distractions compromise the safe and supportive environment we strive to create. Respect your instructor and fellow students by staying focused and supportive.

Late or No-Show Policies

  • Late Arrivals: Due to our location in a fusion space, studio doors may be locked 5 minutes after the start of class to ensure everyone's safety and comfort. Late arrivals disrupt the class flow and the instructor's ability to attend to all students. Further, missing the class warm-up puts you at risk of injury. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late to class, you may be denied entry. If you expect to be late, please notify your instructor in advance, and they will use their discretion to determine if you may participate.

  • No-Shows: Failure to attend a class without prior cancellation will result in the loss of a package or membership credit or full drop-in fee.
    .

  • Cancellation Policy: Cancellations must be made at least 2 hours before class to avoid penalties. Late cancellations (less than 2 hours before class) may result in the loss of a drop-in fee, class pack credit, or membership credit. Refunds are not guaranteed for late cancellations.
    .

Filming and Photography Policies

  • Privacy and Consent: We honor and protect the privacy of everyone in our space. If filming or taking photos for personal use, please avoid capturing other students—or obtain their explicit consent if they appear in the background.

  • Social Media: We love to see your progress online! If you post photos or videos to social media, always get verbal consent from anyone visible in your content. Help us keep this space safe, empowering, and respectful for all.
